John and Alex often disagree on how much to tell clients to water a newly transplanted tree. The truth of the matter is that there are many variables. It is possible to drown a tree if it is in standing water for a long period of time. But we more often see trees that didn't get enough water than trees that were overwatered. Generally, trees need lots of water for at least the first month, gradually tapering off as the tree gets settled in. But transplanted trees often need help for at least 2 years after transplanting, especially if weather patterns are not providing routine moisture. The above instructions are a guideline. Each site is different. Each tree is different.
